Coffee Grounds Recycling [Representative CSR]

Hyundai Steel has operated the eco-friendly CSR project “Coffee Grounds Recycling” based on the multilateral cooperation with Incheon City, the Ministry of Environment, Korea Productivity Center, and the K-Green Foundation. This project has set up a resource circulation system where we collect coffee grounds generated in Incheon and upcycle them into eco-friendly innovative products like flowerpots, bricks, and road pavers, thereby contributing to reducing waste in the local community and creating jobs for the vulnerable. The Coffee Grounds Recycling project, which has been carried out for the past five years since October 2018, was successfully transferred to public project of Incheon City through a stable business transfer procedure and will continue to be operated in the future. Hyundai Steel will continue its activities to discover various recycled resources and establish a recycling system.

Green Village

Hyundai Steel, together with Incheon City Dong-gu, Incheon Social Welfare Council, and Incheon Community Chest of Korea, has been carrying out the ‘Green Village’ urban forest project every year since 2018 to plant trees and create shelters for residents near steelworks in Incheon. Through an employee participation fund, we donated KRW 230 million by 2023 and planted a total of 10,000 trees of 5 species in parks and green spaces in Dong-gu, Incheon over 6 years. In 2023, a total of 800 trees of royal azaleas, winged spindle, boxwood, moonglow, and grass were planted at Incheon Bridge Park in Dong-gu, Incheon. Hyundai Steel plans to continue to pursue various environmental contribution projects to create urban forests near its business sites.

Endangered Species Conservation

Hyundai Steel has implemented the “Endangered Species Conservation” with World Vision starting in 2023 to protect the ecological environment in areas near its business sites. In Suncheon, we are carrying out ecological researches with the NS Ecological Research Institute and the Korea Ecotourism Society, selecting the golden frog as an endangered species for protection, and continuing to carry out ecological conservation activities and campaigns. In Dangjin, we are operating the biodiversity citizen science program ‘I am a citizen scientist too’ and conducting ecological monitoring and investigation with students at sites such as Eumseom Port and Dangjin Stream in Dangjin. Many environmental NGOs in Dangjin participated in this program, including the Dangjin Environmental Movement Federation, Dangjin Sustainable Development Council, the Ecological and Environmental Education Research Institute Pulssi, and the Woori Seed Research Institute. In the long term, we will expand our scope not only to Dangjin and Suncheon but also to Incheon and Pohang and collaborate with various expert groups to carry out practical conservation activities based on scientific research.
